VISITORS might think Newport is hanging out its dirty laundry in public, thanks to a new artwork over the River Usk.

A line of inflatable clothes, designed by Bristol-based artists Luke Egan and Pedro Estrellas (corr), was strung across Newport City Footbridge as part of the city's Big Splash festival.

Bad weather halted the team's first attempt to hang the 80 meter line across the River Usk on Friday when wind and rain meant professional climbers were unable to unfurl the clothes.

But the artists, who specialise in creating inflatable structures, had better luck on Monday with a giant bra, Y-fronts, socks, two T-shirts, a jumper, a vest and a pair of shorts now blowing in the breeze 70 metres above the water.

The flame proof nylon clothes are so large it would take a 22 metre tall person to fill them.

The waistline of the Y-fronts is six metres wide while the T-shirt is eight metres long.

The Big Splash festival is running from August 28 to September 5, with sculpture, street art, circus performances and other events on banks of the River Usk throughout the week.

Newport City Footbridge will be the centre of attention again on August 29 when French circus star Olivier Roustan attempts to perform Europe’s highest ever wire walk above the footbridge as part of the festival programme.
